“Forestry 4.0” (The digital forest) - The future of forestry

Since the last industrial revolution (1969) and especially the invention of the internet, technology’s disruption hasn’t stopped influencing our daily lives no matter which area we’re looking at. To clarify this development:

A current Apple iPhone could simultaneously bring 120 million Apollo 11 missions, including a moon landing, to a successful conclusion. Right now, we’re at the cusp of the next significant transformation called “The third/fourth industrial revolution” (3rd or 4th, depending on what sources we look at), and with it, the industry 4.0.

As traditional as the forestry sector is, even this industry will not get away without significant changes with the latest technology's appearance. These technological innovations will indeed find its way to the forestry as well and affect the following sectors:

  • Forestry and forestry technology
  • Machines, equipment, tools, and other aids for forestry technology
  • New technologies and processes around timber harvesting and logging, including means of transport
  • Logistics and storage systems
  • Information systems and communication

"Internet Of Things" in the forest

There are many topics involved in this “The third/fourth industrial revolution”-term, but regarding the digital side of this disruption, key technologies are being researched, tested, and implemented. The “Internet of Things in the Forest” will ensure that the raw material wood is provided more sustainably and more precisely than before. Mainly, the revolution today is that we can digitally control all our processes and even simulate the entire value chain.
